(Emily) Faith Seed came about like most of the other songs that I write – it just kind of happened. When I say that it “just kind of happened,” what I mean is that the words weren’t my own, but were borrowed from Words that had already been written – all I had to do was add to them the melody that suddenly played in my head.
The basis of Faith Seed comes from Matthew 17, when Jesus tells His disciples that their faith is too small. He tells them that with faith as small as a mustard seed, they can command a mountain to move from one place to another, and it will do just that. Have you ever seen a mustard seed? They are tiny. Google it. Tiny. Now, have you ever seen a mountain? Pretty huge.
“He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” - Matthew 17:20
This notion that I can do something so grand with a faith so small is astounding. It makes me question what kinds of things are getting in my way of having a faith that is that powerful. What doubts are in my mind regarding what Christ can do? What facets of my life am I not trusting Him with? And most of all, what would it look like if I did trust Him with all of my heart, soul, and mind? What could He do through me if my faith burst from a seed and into something more? This song revolves around those questions, and is a prayer for the Lord to transform us into beings that have faith that is forever growing, rooted deep in the trust that He is who He says He is – a God and King who is worthy of all our praise.
(James) Emily first sent me a recording of this song without any instrumental accompaniment. It was just a voice memo of her singing into her phone. I spent about a day putting chords to it and adding a really simple arrangement with a couple electric guitars and a synthetic brass section. When we went to the actual recording process a year later, we ended up barely changing anything at all, only adding some real brass instrumentation alongside the “fake” brass and some percussion. Emily is an incredibly talented songwriter with a lot of potential, and I had a blast working with her song!
