(James) This is one of the most common songs in the Bible. While the primary Scripture inspiration comes from Psalm 113, you can also find a similar version of this worship song from Samuel's mother (1 Samuel 1) and from Mary (Matthew 1). There is a joy in realizing that God descendent from on high to care for the broken and humble-hearted. The first verse is about God's transcendence (his infinite, perfect holiness). The second verse is about his immanence (his divine presence becoming man, being near us and caring for us).
The feel of this song was inspired by Jonsi's fantastic album, "Go." Although the Jonsi album isn't a worship album, there is just an almost child-like joy quality to many of the songs on the album, which I wanted to capture in "No One Like You". He specifically inspired the rising horn parts and the repetitive melodies of the flute parts softly mixed in over the chorus. I wanted joy to be the theme of the song, because joy is the only appropriate response to an understanding of grace. There is more joy in receiving something unearned than in receiving something that is earned. We should never approach our relationship with God as something that God owes us for our good behavior, but as joyful recipients of His goodness in spite of our own faults.
Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised! The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord! - Psalm 113
lyrics
Who is like you, Lord
In all of your majesty
In all of your glory
In all of your power
Who is like you Lord
The Heavens make your throne
Above all nations you are exalted
There is no one like you
None beside you
There's no one like you, God
Let the brokenhearted claim their savior
There's no one like you, God
Who is like you, Lord?
Looking from heaven
Raising the humble
Seating them with honor
Who is like you Lord?
You hear the desperate calling
You give them a home, as part of your family
And all my heart will sing of how you've loved me
And all my heart will sing of your majesty
And all my heart will sing of how you've loved me
Oh all my heart will sing
